This site will document its present state as well as various aspects of its design, operation, and how it was built.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-268\" src=\"https:\/\/datashed.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_0463-e1554831877840-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"827\" srcset=\"https:\/\/datashed.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_0463-e1554831877840-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/datashed.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_0463-e1554831877840-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The shed itself was built in approximately 1955, and has a floor space of\u00a0approximately 300 sq. ft.<\/p>\n<p>There are a variety of boxen in the datashed, from bog-standard x86-64 hardware to various Sun SPARC systems, an HP9000\/800, a VAXstation, and a sizable Alpha cluster.<\/p>\n<p>It is served by two Internet connections: a T1\/DS1 line provided by GTT Communications, and an ADSL line provided by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zianet.com\">ZiaNet<\/a>. There are a large number of static IPv4 addresses on the network, as well as full IPv6 support throughout.<\/p>\n<p>I do lots of software development on the servers, using lots of virtual machines. I also host a FidoNet BBS (1:305\/1) from here, as well as mail and DNS services for various businesses and organizations.<\/p>\n<p>The main routers are Cisco 3845s, the core switch is a Cisco 6506 with a redundant pair of Sup32 supervisors and a 48-port gigabit blade, and the top-of-rack switches are Foundry FastIron Edge x448s.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a Cisco 2611 router that segregates the public WiFi network I run for my neighborhood from the rest.<\/p>\n<p>Core switch to top-of-rack switch interconnects are redundant\u00a0multimode fiber (62.5\/125).<\/p>\n<p>Here are the main racks:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23\" src=\"http:\/\/www.datashed.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Racks.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-23\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Left to Right: Cabinets 1DCA.C04, 1DCA.C03, 1DCA.C02<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Here is the network rack, containing the core switch and the two main routers:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_22\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22\" src=\"http:\/\/www.datashed.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Network.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-22\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cabinet 1DCA.C01. The system consoles all go through a 32-port Altusen rackmount KVM switch at the top of the networking rack.
